I live in a beautiful old oak hammock with trees I can’t reach even half way
around. I have what appear to be huge philodendrons climbing several of them,
with leaves reaching high up into the canopy. They have large "ropey"
vines going up the trunk. They look nice, but I’m afraid they may be harming the
old oaks (holding water, insects etc against the bark). Should I cut them down?
Dear Nancy,
I don’t think the philodendron is a major problem. The worst they could do is possibly
hold moisture against the trunk which could increase the chances of fungal problems.
If you wish to remove it, this will be a major job but I’m not sure it is necessary.
My Best,
Stan
